Jon Griffith has been on a mission to bring the biggest and most iconic climbs to the masses via VR for years. I interviewed Jon for National Geographic several years ago when he was working with with Tenji Sherpa to create a VR experience of what it’s like to climb Everest. Now he’s out with something even cooler (in my opinion)—a full VR experience of free soloing with Alex Honnold.
The project takes place in three iconic locations around the world: the Italian Dolomites, the French Alps in Chamonix, and the Utah desert.
You can watch the main Alex Honnold in VR episodes on Oculus TV on the Quest Platform. I don’t have a VR headset, however, so I haven’t watched it. But Red Bull TV has put out nearly an hour of behind-the-scenes content in a three-part series captured through the eyes of my friend Renan Ozturk, who also worked on this project. These BTS episodes are predictably great in and of themselves, and still have plenty of palm-sweating moments of Honnold doing what no one else in the world can do—climb so calmly and confidently in the most pants-shitting terrain possible.
Beyond the action, the pieces feature some downright gorgeous footage of Honnold climbing in the most beautiful spots on earth. If seeing this footage and these pictures doesn’t make you want to immediately book a trip to the Dolomites, or the Alps, or the desert, maybe you should take up golf.
The Chamonix episode is especially poignant as it features the late Korra Pesce, who recently died a tragic and horrible death on his descent from Cerro Torre after completing a major first ascent.
Hats off to Renan on creating a really well-done BTS series for RedBull TV. And to be honest, the idea of watching Alex Honnold free soloing in VR series might just be the thing that pushes me to invest in an Oculus headset.
