Arc’teryx first released the Konseal, its rugged approach shoe, back around 2018, and it was one of the brand’s first forays into footwear. I remember testing a pair back then and felt it felt a bit clunky: too stiff in the wrong places, and not very comfortable. This summer, Arc’teryx released a pretty significant update to the Konseal, and having tested this shoe on both some long talus-strewn approaches, as well as various high-altitude romps around the Elk Range in my backyard here in Colorado, I’ve been really impressed with how sophisticated this shoe has become. Flexing with my feet naturally but giving me support to keep my feet from getting tired, the Konseal is built for long, tough approaches, especially with heavy loads. This is easily the most durable, stable, and fatigue-sparing approach shoe I’ve ever worn.
The Arc’teryx Konseal is designed as a workhorse for climbers who demand stability, durability, and security in rugged terrain. Whether you’re dragging a haul bag to the base of a wall, or just a schlepping your crag pack with a triple rack of cams to the base of an Indian Creek splitter, having a shoe that doesn’t buckle and bend on every sharp piece of talus is where the Konseal shines.
Arc’teryx Konseal
• Durable, Protective Build: Nubuck leather uppers with abrasion-resistant overlasted construction, DWR coating, and extended lacing deliver breathable, long-lasting performance in harsh alpine terrain.
• Support & Stability: Compressed EVA midsoles paired with carbon-fiber shanks provide cushioning, stiffness, and reliable load-bearing support; updated heel hold improves precision and reduces blisters.
• Confident Traction: Vibram® XS Flash 2 outsoles with dual-purpose lugs (climbing zone at the forefoot, downhill traction at the heel) ensure secure grip and control across rock and rugged trails.
Stability, Durability, and Fit
The Konseal gets its rigidity from a carbon shank that’s embedded in a beefy, burly slab of EVA foam. This design delivers impressive support that you can really notice, especially when you’re carrying a load. When I heard about this shank, I was worried the shoe might feel too stiff. But in fact, the new Konseal feels like it moves with your foot in a very natural way. You can feel the rigidity and support helping to spare your feet from fatigue, but the experience of walking feels like wearing a very comfortable, natural shoe.
The shoe also boasts Vibram XS Flash 2 rubber, with a trail-ready tread (4mm lug depth) that grips rocky surfaces and crumbling, loose trails really well.
The Arc’teryx Konseal also has a nubuck leather upper, over‑lasted abrasion-resistant wrap that’s built to endure tough environments without tearing, much less getting scuffed up. The build is super high quality, and while I have only been wearing these shoes for a couple of months, I am confident these shoes will last me years.
The Konseal includes a refined fit with improved heel lock to reduce slippage and minimize blister risk—a thoughtful update for long days and technical missions.

Weight, the one drag
The Arc’teryx Konseal is not the lightest option out there. At around 410 grams, the Konseal is over 100 grams heavier than many other approach shoes on the market and even heavier than previous iterations of the Konseal itself.
This additional weight means that the Konseal may not be my first choice of approach shoe for multi-pitch missions where I’m clipping the shoes to my harness for the descent. That said, if I were a guide, doing this kind of climbing day in and out, the extra bit of weight might be worth it for the best-in-class support and durability that the Konseal provides.
Bottom Line
The Arc’teryx Konseal isn’t trying to be a one-size-fits-all approach shoe. Instead, it fills a specific role: a highly supportive, durable, and confidence-inspiring option for climbers tackling rugged approaches with heavy loads. Just as skiers have powder skis for storm days and resort skis for groomer days, I think you could think of the Konseal as a shoe that fits into a larger quiver of approach shoes for all the different kinds of climbing that you do. If you value stability and longevity over shaving every gram, the Konseal delivers.
