The Scarpa Rapid LT is minimalist approach shoe that flies up and down trails like a running shoe and ascends technical terrain like a climbing shoe. The Rapid LT is extremely comfortable, pretty lightweight and stylish enough to wear around town and turn heads.
What’s so great about this shoe, in fact, is that it does it all pretty well: running, hiking, and climbing. If you’re going on a climbing trip, for example, and you don’t want to pack an extra pair of running shoes for rest-day trail runs, then the Rapid LT is a great solution.
My one problem with the Rapid LT is that it performed poorly on wet and muddy trails/surfaces. This shoe was quite slippery. In fact, I injured my shoulder when I slipped on some mud walking around the Baltzola Cave in the Basque country of Spain. I wonder if better traction design, or stickier rubber, or some combination thereof, would improve this shoe.
It was no problem to climb up to 5.10 trad in these shoes, which makes them really well suited to ridge traverses and other fun romps in the hills.
There are little details that I appreciated, such as the rear pull tabs, which can tuck away when not in use.
This is a great-fitting shoe for those folks with wider feet. They’re not waterproof. They don’t have ankle support. And I wish that they performed a little better on slippery and muddy surfaces. But for $115, I think these shoes are a screaming good deal.
