2013-04-02 07.54.16-2Just wanted to take a moment to plug a couple of things I’m psyched on. First, be sure to pick up a copy of the new ASCENT on newsstands on April 15 or in subscriber’s mailboxes now, and check out my new article, “The Grapes of Whatever.” It’s loosely about a period in my life when I was living in Palisade, Colorado, working at a winery during the harvest season with my best friend, Dave Roy. After our grueling jobs of making wine, for more exercise, we’d end up doing car-to-car speed ascents of Otto’s Route (5.8) in the Colorado National Monument. We’d run in, climb (with a rope, 6 draws and one #9 nut ) the route as fast as we could, then run out. It was a restorative, transformative period of life for me, and I really enjoyed thinking back to what those days represented—the freedom, the angst, the hip-hop. The result is this article, which has to be one of the weirdest things I’ve ever written. Anyway, I feel honored that it’s included in the new ASCENT, so check it out.

Also, the new episode of The Enormocast, a great climbing podcast by Chris Kalous, features a memorable conversation about various climbing topics between me, Chris and Hayden Kennedy. We all live in the same area, so we just got together one night after a bouldering session on Tuesday night (TNB respect!), and talked shit. I think a few things we said had to be edited out at our lawyers’ suggestion, but for the most part, I think the podcast is pretty edgy and interesting. Mostly, it was fascinating to hear the details of Hayden’s harrowing ascent/descent of the Ogre (albeit nothing like Doug Scott). Coincidentally, Hayden also wrote an article about this significant ascent for the new ASCENT. Currently, Hayden is en route to Chamonix to attend the Piolet d’Or as he and Kyle Dempster are nominated for this climb.

Just got my copy of Ascent and read your article. Excellent. Great mix of humor, climbing, and nostalgia. More “weird” articles.
